Packing Tips
With a little care and planning, you and your stuff will both arrive in mint condition. Most damage comes from vibration. Think of a stack of dishes in a box on the bed of a bouncing truck. No matter how well the sides are padded, a firm up-and-down jolt could crack the entire stack. On the other hand, dishes packed on edge and surrounded by bubble wrap have a better chance of surviving the trip unharmed.
In the long run, it pays to purchase the right packing materials. Sturdy boxes, packing tape and bubble wrap are worth the money. A Tape dispenser may help you move along quicker.
Supplement with copious amounts of blankets and pillows; even clothing can serve as a buffer between breakable objects. There should be no empty space in a box, however don’t overpack the box either.
Use the right box. A good packing job starts with strong, sturdy boxes. Boxes have a seal on the bottom that gives their strength and capacity. That seal will indicate a weight limit and an “Edge Crush Test” rating. 32ect is standard for most moving boxes. 44ect is standard for most wardrobe boxes and larger specialty boxes.
Use heavy-duty packing tape (not masking tape) for the boxes as well as for taping things together (like broom handles).
Packing Techniques
Pack one room at a time, labeling each box with a description of its contents and its destination (e.g., kitchen, bathroom). Be as specific as you can; it will make unpacking that much easier. Keep the weight of your boxes reasonable. If possible, put heavy items in small boxes to make them easier to carry. Don’t apply tape directly to polished or painted wood finishes. Removing the tape could ruin the surface. Double-box fragile items and add plenty of cushioning. When everything is packed and ready to load, make sure the items you need least are loaded first. Common sense is essential when loading the truck. Place the box containing your best china on top of the box of encyclopedias and not vice versa.
Prepare for the first night in your new home by packing essential items in a separate bag and carrying it with you. You may even want to prepare a simple meal that you can heat and serve on your first night.
For each person in the household: a change of clothes, a towel, prescription drugs, a toothbrush, and other personal items.
For everyone: plastic utensils, paper plates, paper towels, plastic cups, toilet paper, toiletries, trash bags, a flashlight, first aid kit including pain relievers, pencil and paper, snacks, beverages, and re-closable plastic bags. Small tool kit for re-assembling items that couldn’t be moved whole.
Appliances
Pack small appliances in original container or a box cushioned with Packing paper (Do not use shredded paper - it can clog the appliance.)
With major appliances, check with the appliance dealer for any special moving instructions. For all large appliances, remove loose fittings and accessories and pack separately. Tie down, tape or wedge all movable parts and doors.
Dishwasher/Washing Machine - Stuff towels between machine sides and tub to keep tub from rotating. Pad exterior well. Disconnect hoses, put in plastic bag, place in tub.
Freezer/Refrigerator - Defrost and dry interiors well. Fill interior spaces with lightweight linens, clothing or stuffed toys. If you want to lay your refrigerator down for moving, check first with the local dealer to determine if your brand can be moved like this. If so, make sure refrigerator stands upright for at least 24 hours before plugging in.
Household Items
Beds - Disassemble the bed frame. Tie rails and cross-pieces together with packing tape. Be sure to mark on tape to show where pieces fit together for reassembly. You can protect your mattress and boxspring with A Matress cover or large sheets of plastic. You may want to cover them just before you walk out the door - the plastic may make it difficult to move downstairs or around awkward corners in your home.
Bicycles, Tricycles, Baby Carriages - Loosen, lower and turn handlebars at right angles to save space. Clean and cover chains and pedals to protect other items from being snagged or soiled.
Books - They’re heavy, so use medium boxes . Don’t mix books with other items. Pack books flat, alternating bindings, and fill empty spaces with packing paper or bubble wrap.
Bureaus, Dressers - Fill drawers with small breakable items and cushion well with loose clothes. Secure drawers with pad or blanket and tape. Do not overload drawers with heavy items.
Chairs - Wrap arms and legs to prevent scratches. Bundle armless chairs in pairs, seat to seat, with a folded blanket or other padding between and tie seats together.
Clothes - Dresses, coats, suits - anything hanging in closets - travel best in reusable wardrobe boxes, which can be used seasonally as “extra closets” for wardrobe storage. Other clothes can remain folded in their regular dresser drawers. Also, Large boxes can hold a lot of clothes without making the box too heavy.
Comforters, Pillows, Large/Light Items – Extra Large boxes will be best for packing light bulky items. If you have small fragile items, you can pack a few in between the pilows for extra protection - just don’t forget they are there!
Curtain Rod Hardware - Put the hardware in a plastic bag and tape to rod or pack in dresser drawers.
Dishes - Individually wrap each piece. Place saucers, plates and platters on edge - DO NOT STACK FLAT. Cups and bowls may be placed inside each other and wrapped three or four in a bundle.
Kitchenware - Pots, pans, etc. can be stacked in a box with packing paper between them. Remember not to make the box too heavy - someone has to carry it!
Glasses - Wrap each glass separately in packing paper or bubble wrap (you can wrap first in a plastic bag to save washing later).
Fine Furniture - You may want to wrap your best furniture in bubble wrap, not only to protect it from scratching, but to keep dust and dirt off the upholstery. Make sure to wrap the item very tight to prevent snags while you are moving.
Lamps - After disassembling lamps, pack small bases in dresser drawers surrounded by loose clothing, and large bases in boxes stuffed with packing paper or bubble wrap. Box shades individually in boxes with plenty of packing paper for stuffing. Don’t use newspaper because it smudges.
Lawn Mowers - Drain fuel and oil before loading. Remove handle from hand mowers and place blade end in sturdy box. Mark properly.
Mirrors, Paintings, Prints - Small mirrors can be well wrapped in paper and packed in boxes. For a larger mirrors and large picture frames, picture boxes work best. Mark GLASS on the outside to prevent mishandling. Always pack and store on end.
Paint and Flammables - Don’t move! The same goes for other flammables such as alcohol, solvents, lighter fluid, ammunition and greasy mops or rags.
Radios, TVs - Box upright and make sure items are well padded on all sides. For console-size equipment, surround with furniture pads, and then move and load upright. Rugs and Pads - After vacuuming rugs and pads, sprinkle with moth flakes. Roll up and tape.
Stereos, Compact Discs and Cassettes - Separately pack components and pack in well-padded box marked FRAGILE. Pack CDs upright in their cases in a sturdy box with tape-reinforced bottom. Tie CDs in small bundles before packing, then fill air space with packing paper. Mark FRAGILE. Cassettes can be packed in a similar manner, although you can group them in larger bundles.
Tables - For large tables, remove legs and tie together. Put hardware in small sealed envelope taped to underside of table top. Pad tops. Pad and tie spare table leaves. For smaller tables, pad top and wrap legs to prevent scratching.
Tools and Gardening Equipment - Drain hoses, coil and pack in boxes. Fill remaining space with lawn sprinklers, small garden hand tools, etc. Combine rakes, shovels, and other long-handled tools together with tape.
Valuables - Set aside jewelry, important papers and safe deposit box contents to be packed in a small container you can keep with you throughout the move.

Removals to Spain things to Remember
As removals companies have countdown diaries to help you remember all those important elements needed before the “Big Day”, I felt it would be useful, for those seeking to relocate to or acquire a holiday home in Spain, to have a “checklist” featuring those items that required specific attention and which could be ticked off as they were completed.
According to a recent report prepared by accountants PKF, more than 74% of Britons want to retire abroad. So if you are part of that majority who’s interested in moving to Spain you’ll need to consider using www.Universal Removals.com Checklist to aid your smooth relocation.
Home
a. Decide which possessions can go to Spain and which can be left or sold back home.
b. Obtain estimates and information from removals companies.
c. List what will be stored and clearly label it - some people even take photographs of the contents and stick them to the outside of the box! Please remember that batteries in kids’ toys, portable radios etc. do tend to corrode and leak if left too long in overheated boxes.
d. Obtain boxes, bubble wrap and masking tape for packaging - you always need more than you think.
e. Check you have nothing to collect from the shoe repairers or dry cleaners, or to take back to Blockbusters.
f. Check moving dates.
g. Finalise your Spanish purchase. Check that the necessary mortgage funds are released and make a transfer to your Spanish bank account - see below.
If you are moving lock, stock and barrel, you may have the cash already to hand for your Spanish home. However, if you intend to keep your UK property, you will need a loan to purchase in Spain.
Many UK lenders, including some of the biggest names, lend on Spanish properties. As long as you have enough equity in the property, you can top up your UK arrangements by way of a re-mortgage.
A Spanish mortgage - from a local Spanish lender - is often a cheaper alternative but you will be servicing the mortgage in euros.
We recommend that you open a Spanish bank account. In order to transfer money into your new Spanish bank account you can either ask your existing UK bankers to handle the transfer or you can go to one of a number of foreign exchange dealers operating in this market. These companies are often cheaper as they usually charge no transfer fee and their rates are almost always better than the big banks.
h. Redirect mail in the UK through the Post Office.
i. Notify your UK bank, insurance, life assurance, health care provider and other financial institutions of your move and provide new contact details.
j. Take final readings for your existing gas, electricity and water accounts. Unless your property is to be retained or rented, arrange for the disconnection of services including phones and broadband. If you are renting, advise your local council tax department.
k. Make final arrangements for your children’s schooling or college places.
l. Make arrangements for your pets to be moved to Spain - please see further below.
m. Notify your doctor of your move and ensure that you make a record of any long-term medication you require - please see further below.
n. Check that all passports and driving licences are valid.
Personal
You’ll need to consider your pensions, tax, life assurance, investments and healthcare arrangements in your new home.
Please note that, for example, a UK national, a Dane, a Swede or Norwegian has the right to live in Spain by virtue of their countries’ membership of the European Economic Area.
If you are retiring abroad, you can continue to receive your UK state pension. If you are moving permanently to Spain, you should get yearly increases in your pension.
a. Before you leave the UK, calculate your retirement income by obtaining and completing a form BR19 from the Retirement Pension Forecasting and Advice Unit (RPFA) on +44 (0)191 218 7585 for a state pension forecast. This is obtainable up to four months before you reach the UK pension age. The forecast you receive - subject to your general entitlement - will tell you what your pension is at the date received and whether or not you will get more by the time you reach UK pension age. Please note if you have already moved, and are paying local Spanish social security payments, that this forecast will not include your local contributions.
b. You should write to the UK Pensions Service to inform them that you are moving to Spain and give them your new address. Their address is:
International Pension Centre
Tyne View Park
NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE
NE98 1BA
Telephone: +44 (0)191 218 7777
Fax: +44 (0)191 218 3836
c. Please note that the state pension age and entitlements may vary between Spain and the UK. To check on your pension rights in Spain we recommend that as a first step you should look at www.ukinspain.com/english/ - the website of the British Embassy in Madrid, which contains a good deal of information useful to those re-locating to Spain from the UK.
d. To obtain your UK state pension in Spain you will need to complete a claim form from the Pensions Service. This is also normally available four months before you reach the UK pensionable age. It asks you if you want to claim a UK retirement pension and for details of any periods of residence and state insurance you have in other countries. If you are living in Spain and claim a pension from that country, the UK Pension Service will pass details of your claim to the Spanish authorities, who will process your pension in Spain.
Please note that your country of residence will affect your liability to pay tax on income over the UK personal allowance. Before you retire to Spain you should seek independent tax advice about any benefits to you of offshore banking as this could reduce your tax liability.
You should inform your local social security office, the Inland Revenue National Insurance Contributions Office (International Services) and the Department for Work and Pensions when you move and provide your contact details in Spain.
Personal and company pension schemes can usually be paid anywhere. The experience of others has shown that some company schemes, for example, will pay a pension only to a UK bank. Further, some annuity companies levy charges for each overseas payment, although others do so for free.
You may consider transferring your pension fund abroad. This would eliminate the euro/sterling exchange rate risk if your fund were maintained in euros. Please note that all such international transfers must receive the prior approval of the Inland Revenue and specialist advice should be obtained from a pensions expert.
Tax
Personal circumstances vary greatly but you may cease to be liable to UK tax if you cut all ties with the UK and become domiciled abroad. However, you will technically be a UK resident if you spend a requisite number of days in the UK and will consequently suffer UK tax on your income.
a. Obtain more information on tax and your domicile status from the Inland Revenue’s document called IR20.
If you do change your residency, cash held offshore may still be liable to tax in Spain depending on local tax rules. Please note that Spain imposes a wealth tax on your worldwide assets. However, as Spain and UK have a double taxation treaty you should be given relief for double taxation.
Please remember that if you are proposing to rent out your UK property this will attract a UK income tax charge.
Inheritance tax
It is essential to ensure that you have a Spanish will - which should be in addition to a UK will. If you have offshore interests you may also wish to consider a will which is specific to that jurisdiction, for example, Gibraltar. Make sure that your various wills dovetail and do not contradict each other. It is advisable for both the husband and the wife to have wills - please see below.
Liability to UK Inheritance Tax (IHT) stems from your amount of assets you own and your domicile. The Inland Revenue considers that you are domiciled in the country of your permanent home. Domicile is distinct from nationality, residency or your country of birth. Changing your domicile is often difficult as the Revenue is reluctant to accept that your departure from the UK is permanent. To be certain you’ll need to obtain from the Revenue written confirmation that they acknowledge that you are no longer domiciled in the UK - if that is your aim.
If you’re domiciled in the UK, IHT applies to your assets, wherever in the world they are situated. If you are domiciled abroad, on the other hand, UK inheritance tax applies only to your assets in the UK.
In Spain you may well be liable to Spanish IHT. You should note that transfers between husband and wife (which are exempt from inheritance tax in the UK) are subject to Spanish IHT following the death of either party.
Liability to capital gains tax (CGT) depends on whether you’re retiring abroad permanently or just buying a holiday home. UK residents are liable to CGT on their worldwide assets, so if you sell your holiday home, it will be subject to CGT in the UK and may well be subject to a payment to the Spanish Tax Office or “Hacienda”. The effect of this may be neutralised by double taxation treaty relief.
Life Assurance
It is prudent to ensure that all UK life assurances are maintained through payment from a UK bank account. In addition, as a change in residency or domicile may constitute a material change it should be disclosed to your life assurance provider in writing.
Investments
Please note that existing investments such as the tax-free status of existing UK investments, PEPs and ISAs, continue to apply, but in ceasing to be a UK tax resident you will have to reduce contributions into them. You will also need to obtain special local advice to establish whether you will become liable to tax on the income from these investments in Spain.
Generally we would recommend that you should seek the assistance of an expert financial adviser to establish what to do about your investments and the best ways to minimise income and capital gains tax.
Health
One of the most important factors to take into account if you are moving to Spain is your long-term healthcare. Collect and complete the E121 form from the Department of Health, which covers UK citizens receiving the state pension for some health costs.
However, you may still find yourself paying substantial additional costs. As a consequence many retirees to Spain take out a comprehensive medical and dental policy.
The Department for Work and Pensions will be able to advise on your rights in Spain - link below.
Department for Work & Pensions: International - pensions and retirement
Pets
If you are going abroad and wish to take your pet cat or dog with you, the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) could allow you to avoid long quarantine periods.
Working guide and hearing dogs may also travel on the scheme. Spain is a participating country in PETS. To be eligible, your cat or dog must meet the requirements of the scheme and travel via certain designated air routes.
You can get more advice about the PETS scheme from:

Costs - guide prices for moving overseas
Several factors can affect prices for overseas moves; eg packing requirements other than standard packing and wrapping (eg crating requirements, cardboard wrapping etc), distance from UK loading address to UK port of exit, destination port within the destination country and distance from the port of entry to the final destination.
Quoted prices are on a door-to-door basis and include all of the elements involved - including packing materials, labour costs for packing and wrapping, and physical loading of the shipping container. Freight charges are what we are charged for getting the shipping container from the UK loading address through to the destination port of arrival.
The following prices are based on 20 foot containers, which would fit the average 3 bedroom house taking virtually all contents. They also assume that we are to ship through to appropriate port at destination, clear customs and deliver to residence and unpack and unwrap. Charges cover customs clearance and delivery to final residence.
Of course we can give you an accurate quote by assessing the actual volume of goods to be moved, which we are happy to do free of charge you can visit our online volume calculator www.universalremovals.com/Latest/Volume-calculator.html or please fill in our quotation form www.universalremovals.com/Quotation-Request.html
Moving from the UK to Australia: £3500-£4000
(for Australia, ALL consignments are unloaded from the shipping container on arrival. It is not possible for the shipping container that is loaded in the UK to be placed at the delivery address in Australia.)
Moving from the UK to Canada or USA: £4000-£5000
Moving from the UK to New Zealand: £3000-£3500

How soon should I arrange for a quotation?
It is never too early to contact a removal company when you are planning an overseas move. We recommend you begin your search at least 12 weeks prior to your move, however some people start their search as soon as 12 months before. It is most important not to leave it until the last minute, which could result in hasty decisions.
How soon should I book my shipment ? We recommend at least 4 weeks before your ideal collection date.
How do you calculate the cost of my removal?
The cost of your removal is based on the volume of goods you would like to ship. To accurately assess the volume a full survey of your property is carried out by one of our International Moving consultants either online or at your home . This is also an opportunity to discuss your individual requirements, and we can answer any questions you may have.

Will you do all of the packing and unpacking?
Packing is an important part of our service; your furniture and effects will be travelling A long way and you want to be sure that everything arrives in one piece. Universal will tailor its packing service around your own specific needs. However, we strongly recommend that you consider the option of a ‘full export pack’. The overall cost is relatively small compared to the additional benefits - such as increased insurance cover and greater physical protection for your furniture.
What happens when my goods arrive at their destination and who will deliver the goods to my new home?
Once you have left the UK, close one-to-one contact with your Universal Move Manager will keep you fully updated with the progress of your move.
Destination services are carried out by overseas partners, who have been specially selected for their ability and expertise. This strict criterion ensures that Universals own high standards are maintained across all continents and cultures, providing a seamless door-to-door international moving service to our customers.
Once your goods have arrived at their destination and cleared customs, we will contact you to arrange A convenient delivery date. Our partner will supply A crew to unload and place all items into your property. Where agreed, they will unpack as much as you require and recycle or dispose of the packing materials.
How long will my shipment take to arrive at the destination?
Overall transit times vary from country to country, mode of transport and destination customs. The following are approximate door-to-door timescales for container shipments from the UK:
Destination Sole Use Container Shared Container
Australia 6-8 weeks 9-11 weeks
New Zealand 7-8 weeks 9-11 weeks
Canada East coast 4-5 weeks 6-8 weeks
Canada West coast 5-7 weeks 6-8 weeks

Will my shipment be opened before it gets to my new house?
In most cases your shipment, if it is a sole use-container, will be delivered to your new residence unopened. In some countries, for example Australia, all containers are unloaded for quarantine inspection. This is always carried out under the strict control of our destination partners.
Customs officials reserve the right to inspect goods anywhere in the world, at their discretion. Inspections are therefore beyond our control.
Will I have to be at the destination for customs clearance?
Most destination countries require you to be in that country while your effects clear customs. However, there are some exceptions - your Move Manager will be able to advise you.
