Frequently Asked Questions
How soon should I arrange for a quotation?
It is never too early to contact a removal company when you are planning an overseas move. We recommend you begin your search at least 12 weeks prior to your move, however some people start their search as soon as 12 months before. It is most important not to leave it until the last minute, which could result in hasty decisions.
How soon should i book my shipment ? We recommend at least 4 - 6 before your dieal collection date.
How do you calculate the cost of my removal?
The cost of your removal is based on the volume of goods you would like to ship. To accurately assess the volume a full survey of your property is carried out by one of our International Moving consultants either online or at your home . This is also an opportunity to discuss your individual requirements, and we can answer any questions you may have.

Will you do all of the packing and unpacking?
Packing is an important part of our service; your furniture and effects will be travelling a long way and you want to be sure that everything arrives in one piece. Universal will tailor its packing service around your own specific needs. However, we strongly recommend that you consider the option of a ‘full export pack’. The overall cost is relatively small compared to the additional benefits - such as increased insurance cover and greater physical protection for your furniture.
What happens when my goods arrive at their destination and who will deliver the goods to my new home?
Once you have left the UK, close one-to-one contact with your Universal Move Manager will keep you fully updated with the progress of your move.
Destination services are carried out by overseas partners, who have been specially selected for their ability and expertise. This strict criterion ensures that Universals own high standards are maintained across all continents and cultures, providing a seamless door-to-door international moving service to our customers.
Once your goods have arrived at their destination and cleared customs, we will contact you to arrange a convenient delivery date. Our partner will supply a crew to unload and place all items into your property. Where agreed, they will unpack as much as you require and recycle or dispose of the packing materials.
How long will my shipment take to arrive at the destination?
Overall transit times vary from country to country, mode of transport and destination customs. The following are approximate door-to-door timescales for container shipments from the UK:
|
Destination |
Sole Use Container |
Shared Container |
| Australia | 7-8 weeks | 10-12 weeks |
| New Zealand | 7-8 weeks | 10-12 weeks |
| Canada East coast | 4-5 weeks | 6-8 weeks |
| Canada West coast | 5-7 weeks | 6-8 weeks |
| USA East coast | 4-5 weeks | 8-10 weeks |
| South Africa | 6-7 weeks | 8-10 weeks |
Will my shipment be opened before it gets to my new house?
In most cases your shipment, if it is a sole use-container, will be delivered to your new residence unopened. In some countries, for example Australia, all containers are unloaded for quarantine inspection. This is always carried out under the strict control of our destination partners.
Customs officials reserve the right to inspect goods anywhere in the world, at their discretion. Inspections are therefore beyond our control.
Will I have to be at the destination for customs clearance?
Most destination countries require you to be in that country while your effects clear customs. However, there are some exceptions - your Move Manager will be able to advise you.
