(www.briansack.com) I wrote a satirical piece about this commercial over ten years ago. Imagine my surprise when the actress in it emailed me from South Africa where it was shot. She’d NEVER SEEN her spot - a spot which was a cult classic and spoofed galore, including a Foo Fighters music video. The poor girl had been searching for this spot for over a decade. I thought this was terribly unfresh and searched high and low to no avail. Things looked bleak. Eventually I reached out to friends in high places looking for any way to locate a copy. An advertising friend (now renown for writing the GEICO Caveman ads) found the spot. Though the quality belies its age, I made a nice South African actress very happy. A very Mentos ending indeed.

OMG, am I really dum, or did I just get the concept of this commercial almost 10 years later? SO the fear in business man’s eyes in 0:18 is from the girl calling over the big four dudes -he’s like “gulp” nervous look on his face, he thinks, she’s going to have them kick his ass for boxing her in, but then when he sees they’re only lifting her car out, like a sigh of relief, and he looks at the girl like”oh shit, you had me scared a second there, pheww, hehe”.Damn, mentos is the thinking mans candy.

The red car in this commercial is a 1955-circa-1966 Fiat 500. It is certainly light enough for four men to lift, weighing 1200 pounds or so, with a 500cc two-cylinder engine.

I loved Mentos commercials… You could do anything you wanted, but as long as you had Mentos, it was cool. You could rob a bank, and if you showed the cops your pack of Mentos, you walked away freely.

The Foo Fighters re-enacted this commercial in their video for ‘Big Me’, along with other non-commercial events, along with a parody of Mentos called ‘Footos - the fresh fighter’.

Nothing gets to you, staying fresh staying cool, with Mentos, fresh and full of life.
Fresh goes better, Mentos freshness, fresh goes better with Mentos, fresh and full of life!
Mentos, the freshmaker!
